Songs + Albums

DAVID STOOPS is a pop songwriter in the Nick Lowe/Pete Townshend tradition. Stoops cranks out tunes as sparkling and bright as a fistful of new sixpence coins. With a repertoire ranging from melodic Merseybeat to cinematic waltzes, Stoops has been called “the Robyn Hitchcock of Portland.”

Too young to have fought in the original British Invasion, David Stoops has been secretly waging a series of holding actions in the Portland area for years. His 2006 album, Spill Your Drink is appropriate for rainy nights for the soul, pub singalongs and long drives through the moorlands. It was co-produced and recorded by local legend Brian Berg (44 Long), who passed away in 2015. A second batch of tracks from those Berg sessions is slated to be released in late 2022.

Further recordings took place not long after with Justin Thorpe. Old friends The Quags recorded “Heavenly Heights” for their 2017 EP, Another Moment in Time. Wearing his Anglophile influences on his sport-coat sleeves. Portland-native David Stoops has an ear for sharp hooks and pen for distinctive lyrics.
